Whether it is to improve focus and mental clarity or to improve mood and overall brain function, the use of various herbal remedies has been around for some time. Is there any real benefit to using herbal supplements? Scientists are finding out that it may indeed have merit after all.
When it comes to improving your focus and mental function there are many herbs out there that have been promoted as having a positive effect on the brain. However, most people while they are comfortable using supplements for vitamins, antioxidants and other uses may still be a bit skeptical when it comes to using them for enhanced cognitive ability.
With the growth of the supplement industry, researches have increasingly been turning their attention to the study of various herbs and the impact they have on the body. A number of those studies have looked at the ability of herbs to improve your focus, mood and other mental aspects. The results in many cases were surprising.
Of all the herbs out there touted as helping to improve focus and mental ability, Ginkgo Biloba is perhaps one of the oldest and most popular. Coincidently, it is also one of the most studied herbs out there.
Ginkgo was shown in many of those studies to help the brain in a number of ways. First, it increases blood flow to the brain which is a key component of brain function and memory as the brain is the largest user of oxygen among the organs and requires a steady blood flow. It has also been studied with Alzheimer’s patients to see if it would improve focus, memory and brain function and was shown to be at least as effective as some prescription medications in use today.
Aside from improving your focus by increasing blood flow, Gingko also acts as an antioxidant protecting the brain from damage by free radicals. Scientists are beginning to think that free radical damage is a contributing factor in both age related mental decline and various diseases like Alzheimer’s.
Ginseng is another popular herb that has been in use for centuries. Ginseng can be used to improve your focus, mood and help the body adapt better to stress. A study of Siberian Ginseng was done that showed promising results for Ginseng increasing memory and concentration in the participants. Ginseng also seems to boost the immune system and help protect the body (and brain) from illness.
Gotu Kola is perhaps not as well known in the US for brain power, but has been in use in China and other parts of Asia for thousands of years. Gotu Kola has traditionally been used to increase mental clarity and improve focus as well as heal wounds and treat other disorders. Research seems to bear out these uses.
However, studies also indicate that Gotu Kola may boost memory and IQ as well as help reduce blood pressure. The more scientists are discovering about this herb, the more its usage will grow.
Passion Flower is probably as unknown among the general population as Gotu Kola, but it also has some strong abilities when it comes to the brain. It has been widely used in Europe in conjunction with other herbs to help reduce anxiety and calm the mind. It may also reduce nervousness and other similar disorders thereby improving your focus and mood.
This herb is still being studied and has not received as much attention as some of the other herbs. Yet, it is still used frequently by herbalists and others in the US to help regulate mood and anxiety in the brain.
There are many other herbs we could discuss that improve focus, mood, memory and brain function. This sampling gives us a good picture though of how the use of natural herbs has benefit for our minds. Modern research is highlighting what has been believed about these herbs for generations and proving that there is truth to some of the old tales about how they work. The more we learn, the more we realize the power of some of these herbs.
